CHURCH WITH ALUTIQ BENTWOOD
HATS
This is a print from the Artist’s Studio. It has a plastic film covering. The original date is 3-17-96
The Alutiq bentwood hats are made of spruce wood with decorations of bands, rosettes, volutes, dots. and leaves painted in black, white, red, brown, and green; has sea lion whiskers, feathers, ivory; the wood was first chiseled thin, softened by steaming and soaking in hot water, and bent so that the two ends could be sewn together at the back. The hats were worn by men of status and could cost up to 3 slaves.
Jacob Simeonoff of Kodiak Island has
resurrected the art of bentwood hats.
The Holy Resurrection Russian Orthodox Church, Kodiak, Alaska was built in 1946 after the original church on the same site burned July 17, 1943. The first chuch was built atop a hill near where the Anderson family lived and the old Kodiak jail was located before the March 1964 earthquake.
